Now technology is not limited to desktop and mobile devices. Our lives are filled with digital things nowadays. Desktop and mobile devices were just a teaser of how our life is going to change with technology. Now the real thing begins. The Internet of things or IoT is trending right now. Why?

“If you think that the internet has changed your life, think again. The Internet of Things is about to change it all over again!”

— Brendan O’Brien

What is the Internet of Things or IoT?

Any physical object can be transformed into an IoT device by embedding sensors and data chips into that device. This transformed device is known as IoT. Pretty much any physical object can be transformed into an IoT device.

The term IoT refers to devices that operate easily without any internet connection. IoT devices have their independent functionalities however some of the features are available only through the internet.

“The opportunity we have is to build a secure, intelligent platform that solves some of the world’s greatest problems at scale. That’s what’s possible with hundreds of billions of connections and the capabilities that we can deliver together.”

— Chuck Robbins

History of IoT

In 1999, British technologist Kevin Ashton first introduced the term IoT. for developing products that not only connect people but connect objects also. At that time people thought it was a science fiction movie thing, not a reality.

The progress in IoT devices was slow because the technological support needed to develop these devices was not sufficient. After decades this technology is booming due to the introduction of nanotechnology. The market revenue of IoT is $34.8 bn. Adding RFID to things for tracking purposes was the first IOT model introduced. The leading company in IoT cloud-backed segment is AWS.

Mind-blowing examples of IoT devices:

  • Internet-Connected Jacket: This jacket is developed by Levi’s and tech giant Google. This jacket is connected to your smartphone and can perform several tasks like receiving calls through gestures, measuring your body temperature, swiping songs, and many other digital functionalities. This jacket is known as “Levi’s Commuter Trucker Jacket”. The introductory model of this jacket was priced at $350 only.
  • Amazon Dash Button: This is a compact device that is used to order consumer goods online. This device analyzes your ordering pattern and notifies you when an item is out of stock. This device helps owners to reorder the items that they use frequently.
  • Kuri Mobile Robot: This miniature robot is developed by Mayfield Robotics. It is generally intended to capture your daily moments. It has an embedded sensor touch and HD camera installed. This robot has a loving personality. It entertains teenagers and interacts with them responsively. This robot constantly patrols the house. The roving camera can immediately detect intruders.
  • Smart Light Switches: Ever wonder whether you can control your light switches anywhere regardless of the location? Yes! That thing is possible because of the internet of things. Smart light switches are connected to Wi-Fi connection and you can control switches on your smartphones.
  • Air Pollution Monitor: This device measures the quality of the air that we breathe for specific regions. Provides alerts according to the region and notifies the region where air pollution is higher.
  • Nest Smoke Alarm: This device is developed by tech giant Google. This device thinks, speaks, and alerts your mobile about any intervening emergencies. This product is priced at $119 on Amazon.
  • Harmony Universal Remote: This device is developed by Logitech. You can control all your IoT devices from a single remote regardless of your location. This device is developed to decentralize the functions of all your IoT devices into one. This device is priced at $349.99.
  • Smart Vacuum Cleaner: There is a variety of smart vacuum cleaners available in the market. This vacuum cleaner is programmed to smart clean your home according to paths fed in them. Popular models of smart vacuum cleaners are of tech giant XIAOMI.
  • Intelligent Convection Oven: This oven is developed by June company. This device identifies what are you cooking with the camera. This device also provides suggestions on how to make it. You can also track your cooking process. This device helps you in cooking tastier meals with no mistakes in temperature or timing.
  • Connected Appliances: This device is developed by GE. In this device, all your IoT appliances like refrigerators, ovens, dishwashers, vacuum cleaners, dryers, and water heaters, are connected to Wi-Fi. You can manage all your IoT appliances from one device only.

The internet of things is going to revolutionize your daily use of equipment into a smart one. The IoT is still in its beta process. Due to the introduction of the 5g network this technology will get a boost in its development. Because of IoT, our lives will get easier and more comfortable.
